EVOLVE: Following the Trend of Asymmetrical Gaming

evolve_logoAfter the release of the Wii U, game developers got an idea. Why do multi-player games always have to be evenly matched?

2K Games – the creators of Left 4 Dead – are releasing a new multi-player only game for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC in February 2015. In Evolve, four Hunters collaborate to fight against a fifth person who plays as a boss Monster. The Hunters have to track, find, and kill the Monster before it levels up and evolves into an unstoppable force.

I was fortunate enough to play a demo match for Evolve at this year’s San Diego Comic Con International. It was fun and well-balanced, but the map was huge, so it took a bit of strategy as a Hunter to trap the monster. It was pretty close, but we managed to stop the monster before he took out our generator.

Overall, the game feels like a more focused version of the Versus mode in Left 4 Dead 2, where players take over different types of special infected. Evolve differs in that it is a strategy game, not the average “run in, die, re-spawn, repeat” multi-player mode that is common among blockbuster games.

Evolve is out February 10th, 2015.
