Michael Jordan Still Has Ball Swag

michael jordan knuckle dragger magazineWith all the talk of Lebron James and him winning his MVP, I have to go back to a talk that has been raging since James hit the scene. Is  Michael Jordan still the best b-baller of all time? The short answer is, yes.

While Lebron is a force to be reckoned with, Jordan has cemented himself in the basketball annuls as one of the most polarizing figures in American history. He sits atop conversations with people like Ali, Elvis, and Sinatra.

James is popular, but will never be Jordan popular, no matter how many scoring titles, MVPs, or championships he accumulates.

At one point and time, Michael Jordan was basketball. People watched the Chicago Bulls, just because they wanted to see him play. Who could forget the “Be Like Mike” commercial. Shit, I thought I could dunk after that. I then realized I was 5’4 and very, very, vertically challenged.

When was the last time you turned on a Miami Heat game to see James play? Never? Me either.

Lebron has zero charisma, and kinda comes off as self-entitled prick. Also, in today’s game, there are so many players that overshadow James. Last year it was Linsanity, and lets not forget Kobe Bryant, Derrick Rose, Kevin Durant, Kevin Garnett, and a slew of other well-equipped players that get as much fanfare as James does at any point and time.

There’s something magnificently boring about James and his accomplishments. People don’t root for his success. Jordan was the people’s champion, way before the Rock started wrestling in those tight-ass shorts.

And let’s not forget the Jordan name. Nike, Gatorade, Michael Jordan Motorsports, Air Jordan; They have an identity. Macklemore devoted a song to talking about Jordan’s. The sheer awe that comes from the Jordan name will only continue to grow.

Maybe except for the Bobcats. Even though Jordan made history as the first player ever to become the minority owner of a pro team, he’s been crowned as one of the worst owners in NBA history, effectively tarnishing his legacy off of the court.

Even with some monumental missteps, Jordan still remains a legend, and his name commands more respect a decade after his retirement than James does now. My guess is that James will continue to score and win because he’s built to be successful, but he, like many others will never get out of the shadow cast by the greatest in the world. The guy they call His Airness.

Here’s  a  video countdown of Jordan’s Top 50 plays.
