Caged Power 5 Recap

Jessic Richman Knuckle Dragger magazineConnellsville, PA, a place that is probably known more for its farm life than fighting scene, hosted Caged Power 5 at the Ice Mine to a packed house of fight hungry fans. For all of you that are wondering…No, they don’t really mine ice. I’m 32% sure you just have to freeze water to create ice.

The night started off with the amateur brawlers, and I’m usually less than excited to see them, but tonight marked the first  fight of Brazen Boxing and MMA Gym’s founder, Jessica Richman as she squared off against Laura Byrnes. After Richman worked out her early fight jitters, she dominated Byrnes throughout the first round, showing off some of her self-admitted “weird farm girl strength” by completely leveling Byrnes with a huge slam.

To be honest, I’ve never seen a female pick up someone and send her to the mat with such force. Richman won in the second round via armbar, and appeared to do a variation of the Harlem shake for her victory dance. Look for our feature story on Richman and Brazen Boxing Gym in our upcoming issue. Follow my journey to Philly as I eat a cheese steak and perhaps get slammed by someone half my size. Bucket list…Complete.

In the main event, Johnson Jajout made easy work of PJ Palmer. It was clear that Palmer was outmatched in size and strength. After the first round, Palmer’s corner threw in the towel after they saw enough. From what I saw Palmer was able continue, he just didn’t want to. Isn’t that the whole point of fighting, to fight? Oh well.

Francis ‘Maddog’  Healy put on a great fight against Justin McNally. Healy finished McNally in the second round via rear naked choke. He kept McNally on the ground for most of the fight and escaped a couple sticky positions to come out with the victory. The Thick as Thieves sponsored fighter’s military like fan presence made it a great win for the entire crowd. Rah rah.

In the walking dead match, Jeremy Linville and Nathan Bryant definitely put on the most bloody fight of the evening. Linville caught Bryant with a clean right hand which opened up a faucet of blood pouring out of Bryant’s nose. The dark red ocean that literally covered Bryant’s face quickly lead to a stoppage in the first round. I don’t say this much, but it was kinda gross, and most of the audience agreed. I was half-expecting to see that weird doll on a tricycle from “Saw” come pedaling around the corner.

The knockout of the night came when Jeffery Peterson turned out the lights on hometown hero Adam Bosley with a short right hook as the two broke from a clinch. Bosley was out before he hit the mat, but Peterson followed up with a hammer fist to his face, just for good measure. After the win, Peterson screamed a lot, and then of course gave Bosley a hug.

Overall, I had a great time watching the fights. Congrats to all of the warriors that walked into the cage. Win or lose, it takes guts to say, “I’m probably going to get punched in the face by this person, let’s do it.”

Also, thanks to the Roller Derby Girls for not knocking me down as you skated by.

A few days ago I found myself in the most unbearably long line at Walmart. While impatiently waiting, like many shoppers, I found myself reading the covers of magazines on display. […]
