Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort make quick work of British fighter Michael Bisping in last nights feature match on FX. It’s still really weird to hear the Fox NFL music before a fight. I’m half expecting to see Peyton Manning run out and throw a few warm up passes around. Belfort looked great at 185lbs, a departure from his early days fighting at 215lbs. In the first round, the two played the get to know you game until the last-minute of the round where Belfort landed a few great shots, along with a menacing head kick. The second round started out a little more fast-paced with the two exchanging more and more. And then, the kick from Hades. Belfort, a southpaw, landed a left high-kick to the temple of Bisping, giving a whole new meaning to bangers and mash.
Although Bisping seemed to be covering up intelligently, the ref called the fight at 1:27 in the second round. Bisping didn’t complain about the stoppage, congratulating Belfort at the end of the match. Belfort, who is a native of Sao Paulo Brazil, fought in front of his home crowd and received a raucous reception to the knockout victory.
Belfort, who has been in the UFC since 1997, was donned with the title of having the fastest hands on the planet after a complete obliteration of David “Tank” Abbott.
Bisping was in line to fight Anderson Silva, but with this loss, his hopes of a title shot are derailed. “It was a beautiful kick. He caught me. He was better than me tonight,” Bisping said after the fight. Humble pie never tastes good, but it’s always nice to see great sportsmanship.
Belfort, who said in a pre-fight interview ” I don’t need to fight anymore, I want to fight” now resides in Florida where he trains with the Blackzilians.
