Riverhounds Swanky New Stadium in Station Square

Image When you think of sports in Pittsburgh, you immediately think of the Steelers, the Pirates, and the Penguins. But what about the Riverhounds? In our area, and really, all throughout the country, soccer is kind of an underrated sport that is rarely not overlooked.
The Riverhounds have never had an official home, but that’s all about to change. They have recently played their last home game at Chartiers Valley High School. Next season, they’ll have a home stadium of their own. Set to be completed this fall, the Riverhounds will be playing at a new stadium in Station Square. The Riverhounds will be only the third team in the league to have their own stadium.
The 2013 season will really be a groundbreaking year for them. The new stadium will also host the Pittsburgh Passion professional women’s football team. Along with other sports like rugby, and lacrosse. The stadium is estimated to cost 7 million dollars is privately financed. It is also believed to be great for the city, anticipated to bring in jobs, and also tourism.
As for a little Riverhounds history, they were founded in 1999 and they are the only professional soccer team in the tri-state area. In a deal with an English soccer club, they have created the Riverhounds academy, which is a soccer program for the youth.
Personally, even though I’m not a huge soccer fan, I’m psyched to see the team get a new home. And hopefully, over the next few years, when you think Pittsburgh, you’ll think Riverhounds.
